What is the NEF format?

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is a Nikon camera RAW format. Its TIFF-based RAW container normally stores sensor data, camera metadata, and embedded previews.

ViewRawNow reads camera-written JPEG previews first. It loads local LibRaw WASM only when a suitable embedded preview is unavailable; it does not claim to develop every camera or compression variant.

How to open NEF files in a browser

Choose a folder that contains Nikon NEF files. ViewRawNow validates each TIFF-based NEF, reads its camera-generated JPEG preview first, and keeps the original RAW data on your device. This is useful when you need a quick NEF viewer without installing NX Studio or uploading a shoot.

Inside Nikon NEF previews

NEF is used by Nikon DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless cameras, but the recording options are not identical across generations. Files may contain 12-bit or 14-bit sensor data and use lossless, lossy, or newer HE/HE* compression.

For fast review, ViewRawNow walks TIFF, EXIF, and SubIFD references and chooses a browser-readable embedded JPEG. It does not develop the sensor mosaic unless that preview is unavailable, when the local LibRaw WASM fallback is tried.

A missing embedded JPEG, an unusual maker-note layout, or a compression variant unsupported by the bundled LibRaw can prevent a preview. The public regression baseline currently covers Nikon D7200 12-bit lossless, 12-bit lossy, and 14-bit lossless NEF files. Nikon NRW is a separate compact-camera RAW format and is not treated as NEF.

How ViewRawNow opens NEF files

  1. Find NEF files in the selected local folder and verify the TIFF-based RAW container.
  2. Inspect TIFF, EXIF, and SubIFD JPEG previews for usable embedded images.
  3. Choose a preview near 1800 pixels for progressively rendered cards.
  4. Read the largest suitable preview only when the larger viewer opens.
  5. Use local LibRaw WASM only when no embedded preview can be used.
  6. Keep RAW bytes, filenames, paths, and EXIF data on the device.

NEF viewer FAQ

Can I open NEF files online?

Yes. ViewRawNow opens NEF files from a local folder in your desktop browser. The review happens on your device rather than through a photo-upload service.

Are my NEF photos uploaded?

No. RAW data, previews, filenames, paths, and EXIF metadata remain in the browser. ViewRawNow has no RAW photo upload endpoint.

Can ViewRawNow edit or convert NEF files?

No. ViewRawNow is for previewing, sorting, inspecting, and selecting RAW photos. It does not adjust or convert sensor data.

Which Nikon cameras are tested?

The current real-camera regression baseline covers Nikon D7200 with these samples: 12-bit lossless NEF, 12-bit lossy NEF, 14-bit lossless NEF. Other models may work, but they are not claimed as verified.

Why can NEF previews fail?

A usable embedded JPEG may be missing or damaged, or the file may use a variant that the bundled LibRaw cannot decode. Nikon HE and HE* files prefer the embedded JPEG; development can fail when it is missing and LibRaw cannot decode the compression.
