What is the DNG format?

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open, TIFF/EP-based RAW container used by cameras, phones, scanners, and conversion software. It is not a camera brand format, and camera-native DNG files can differ from converted or linear DNG files.

ViewRawNow reads camera-written JPEG previews first. It loads local LibRaw WASM only when a suitable embedded preview is unavailable; it does not claim to develop every camera or compression variant.

DNG is a container standard, not one camera mode

Digital Negative is a TIFF/EP-based format used by Adobe converters, phones, scanners, and cameras from multiple manufacturers. A .dng extension does not guarantee that every file has the same sensor layout or preview set.

ViewRawNow follows TIFF, EXIF, and SubIFD references and ignores lossless-JPEG sensor tiles that browsers cannot display as ordinary photos. If no embedded display preview is found, local LibRaw development is the fallback.

The current real-camera regression fixture is a standard, non-Pixel-Shift Pentax K-1 DNG. That evidence does not claim coverage for phone computational DNG, linear DNG, Pixel Shift, or other multi-frame variants.

How ViewRawNow opens DNG files

  1. Find DNG files in the selected local folder and verify the TIFF/EP-based DNG container.
  2. Inspect TIFF, EXIF, and SubIFD JPEG previews for usable embedded images.
  3. Choose a preview near 1800 pixels for progressively rendered cards.
  4. Read the largest suitable preview only when the larger viewer opens.
  5. Use local LibRaw WASM only when no embedded preview can be used.
  6. Keep RAW bytes, filenames, paths, and EXIF data on the device.

DNG viewer FAQ

Can I open DNG files online?

Yes. ViewRawNow opens DNG files from a local folder in your desktop browser. The review happens on your device rather than through a photo-upload service.

Are my DNG photos uploaded?

No. RAW data, previews, filenames, paths, and EXIF metadata remain in the browser. ViewRawNow has no RAW photo upload endpoint.

Can ViewRawNow edit or convert DNG files?

No. ViewRawNow is for previewing, sorting, inspecting, and selecting RAW photos. It does not adjust or convert sensor data.

Which DNG files are tested?

The real-camera baseline covers a standard, non-Pixel-Shift Pentax K-1 DNG. It does not imply verification of every camera-native, converted, linear, phone, Pixel Shift, or multi-frame DNG variant.

Why can DNG previews fail?

A usable embedded JPEG may be missing or damaged, or the file may use a variant that the bundled LibRaw cannot decode. The current real-camera regression fixture is a standard Pentax K-1 DNG, not Pixel Shift or multi-frame DNG.
